CVE-2025-71119

Description

A warning condition was found in the Linux kernel's PowerPC kexec implementation. When SMT (Simultaneous Multi-Threading) is disabled or partially enabled, attempting to kexec into a new kernel triggers warnings because the kexec code tries to wake offline CPUs that fail the cpu_smt_thread_allowed() check. The add_cpu() call fails for non-primary threads when SMT is disabled, causing kernel warnings during the reboot process.

Statement

This issue affects PowerPC systems using kexec when SMT is not fully enabled. The warning occurs during the kexec reboot sequence but does not prevent the kexec from completing. The impact is limited to kernel warnings in the log rather than a functional failure. This primarily affects enterprise PowerPC servers with many CPU cores.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Confidentiality

Technical Impact: Read Memory; Read Application Data

When reusing a resource such as memory or a program variable, the original contents of that resource may not be cleared before it is sent to an untrusted party.

Availability

Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart

The uninitialized resource may contain values that cause program flow to change in ways that the programmer did not intend.
