CVE-2025-64031

Description

A flaw was found in libarchive, a data archiving library. This vulnerability, a heap-based buffer overflow in the gzip writer, occurs when handling the original-filename field. While exploitation requires a specific, marginally plausible scenario where an untrusted source provides the filename, a successful attack could lead to a denial of service (DoS).

Statement

Moderate impact: Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform and Red Hat Hardened Images are affected by a heap-based buffer overflow in libarchive's gzip writer when an untrusted party supplies the original-filename field. Exploitation requires local access, high attack complexity, no privileges, and user interaction; successful exploitation can cause a denial of service through loss of availability. The OpenShift Container Platform affects are deferred because the Red Hat CVSS score is 4.7, below 7.0, and the impact is Moderate; the residual risk is the specific availability-denial scenario described above. The Red Hat score is higher than the CVE.org Low score of 2.5 because Red Hat rates the availability impact as High rather than Low. For Red Hat Hardened Images, the issue is delegated and a fix is being pursued.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
