CVE-2025-26625
Description
A flaw was found in Git LFS. Running git lfs checkout and git lfs pull in a specially crafted repository, specifically with symbolic or hard links tracked by Git LFS and pointing to files outside the working tree or in a bare repository, can cause Git LFS to write to arbitrary file system locations accessible to the user running these commands.
Statement
This vulnerability can cause Git LFS to write to arbitrary file system locations accessible to the user running git lfs checkout and git lfs pull. These commands are typically run by regular users without special access to system files, limiting the impact of this issue.
Mitigation
To prevent the creation of symbolic links when cloning or fetching a repository, the core.symlinks configuration option can be set to false, mitigating this vulnerability for new repositories. However, existing repositories containing symbolic or hard links are still vulnerable to this issue.
Use the following command to set the core.symlinks configuration option to false:
git config --global core.symlinks false
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)
Confidentiality,Integrity,Access Control
Technical Impact: Read Files or Directories; Modify Files or Directories; Bypass Protection Mechanism
An attacker may be able to traverse the file system to unintended locations and read or overwrite the contents of unexpected files. If the files are used for a security mechanism then an attacker may be able to bypass the mechanism.
Other
Technical Impact: Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands
Windows simple shortcuts, sometimes referred to as soft links, can be exploited remotely since a ".LNK" file can be uploaded like a normal file. This can enable remote execution.
