CVE-2025-24294

Description

A denial of service flaw was found in resolv ruby gem. This flaw allows an attacker to craft a malicious DNS packet containing a highly compressed domain name. When the resolv library parses this packet, the name decompression process consumes a large amount of CPU resources, as the library does not limit the resulting length of the name.

Statement

Moderate impact affects Red Hat Insights compliance-backend and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Ruby packages in the affected RHEL streams. A remote attacker without privileges can send a crafted DNS packet containing a highly compressed domain name to a process using the resolv gem; excessive decompression CPU consumption can make the application thread unresponsive, resulting in denial of service. Red Hat's CVSS is 5.3 (Moderate), lower than CISA's 7.5 (Important) because Red Hat assesses the availability impact as Low rather than High. Remediation for the affected entries is deferred in the current record, which does not document a more specific reason; the residual risk is continued CPU exhaustion and denial of service when attacker-supplied DNS packets are parsed. Ruby 4.0 entries in RHEL 9 and RHEL 10 are not affected because the vulnerable code is not present, while the RHEL 6 and RHEL 7 entries are marked out of support.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
