CVE-2024-58379

Description

A flaw was found in Nodemailer. A remote attacker can exploit a regular expression denial of service (ReDoS) vulnerability by sending specially crafted emails containing malicious data URLs or embedded attachments. This can cause the email parsing process to hang, leading to a denial of service for the affected system.

Statement

This Moderate flaw in Nodemailer, a dependency in several Red Hat products, allows a remote attacker to trigger a Regular Expression Denial of Service (ReDoS). By sending specially crafted emails containing malicious data URLs or embedded attachments, an attacker can cause the affected application's event loop to hang, leading to a temporary denial of service. This impact is considered Moderate as it requires specific input and results in service disruption rather than data compromise or arbitrary code execution. Red Hat products ship with newer, unaffected versions of Nodemailer and are not impacted.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Technical Impact: DoS: Resource Consumption (CPU)

Attackers can create crafted inputs that intentionally cause the regular expression to use excessive backtracking in a way that causes the CPU consumption to spike.
