CVE-2024-53070
Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's USB DesignWare Core 3 (dwc3) driver. When a system suspend is initiated while the USB controller is already in a low-power runtime suspended state, the driver attempts to access unpowered device hardware registers, leading to a kernel crash. A local user with system privileges could exploit this issue by triggering a system suspend, resulting in a Denial of Service (DoS).
Mitigation
Prevent the dwc3 kernel module from loading on systems where Synopsys DesignWare USB3 controllers are not required.
Create a configuration file in /etc/modprobe.d/ by executing the following commands as root:
# echo "blacklist dwc3" >> /etc/modprobe.d/dwc3.conf
# echo "install dwc3 /bin/true" >> /etc/modprobe.d/dwc3.conf
Caveats: This operational control disables support for hardware relying on the dwc3 driver, rendering associated USB controllers unusable. If the dwc3 module is already loaded, a system restart is required for the configuration to take effect.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
