CVE-2024-50143
Description
From CVE.org
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: udf: fix uninit-value use in udf_get_fileshortad Check for overflow when computing alen in udf_current_aext to mitigate later uninit-value use in udf_get_fileshortad KMSAN bug[1]. After applying the patch reproducer did not trigger any issue[2]. [1] https://syzkaller.appspot.com/bug?extid=8901c4560b7ab5c2f9df [2] https://syzkaller.appspot.com/x/log.txt?x=10242227980000
Statement
The bug could happen only if udf file system being used. It would be hard to use it for attack, because uninitialized variable being read in udf_get_fileshortad only visible with KMSAN (KASAN debugging) enabled.
Mitigation
To mitigate this issue, prevent module udf from being loaded. Please see https://access.redhat.com/solutions/41278 for how to blacklist a kernel module to prevent it from loading automatically.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)
Confidentiality
Technical Impact: Read Memory; Read Application Data
When reusing a resource such as memory or a program variable, the original contents of that resource may not be cleared before it is sent to an untrusted party.
Availability
Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart
The uninitialized resource may contain values that cause program flow to change in ways that the programmer did not intend.
