CVE-2024-47697
Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's rtl2830_pid_filter function within the dvb-frontends/rtl2830 driver. A local attacker with administrative (root) privileges could exploit this by providing an index value of 32 or greater, which would cause an out-of-bounds write. This could lead to memory corruption, potentially impacting system stability or integrity.
Statement
This issue is considered to be a moderate impact flaw, as the exploitation for this will need an ADMIN (or ROOT) privilege (PR:H).
Mitigation
To mitigate this issue, prevent the `rtl2830` kernel module from loading if the associated hardware is not in use. This can be achieved by blacklisting the module:
echo "install rtl2830 /bin/true" > /etc/modprobe.d/disable-rtl2830.conf
A system reboot is required for this change to take effect. This mitigation may impact functionality if the Realtek RTL2830 DVB-T demodulator is actively used.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)
Integrity
Technical Impact: Modify Memory; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands
Write operations could cause memory corruption. In some cases, an adversary can modify control data such as return addresses in order to execute unexpected code.
Availability
Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart
Attempting to access out-of-range, invalid, or unauthorized memory could cause the product to crash.
Other
Technical Impact: Unexpected State
Subsequent write operations can produce undefined or unexpected results.
