CVE-2024-41110

Description

A vulnerability was found in Authorization plugins in Docker Engine (AuthZ). Using a specially-crafted API request, an Engine API client could make the daemon forward a request or response to an authorization plugin without the body. In certain circumstances, the authorization plugin may allow a request that it would have otherwise denied if the body had been forwarded to it.

Statement

This flaw is a regression of a fix from a 2019 issue for this same scenario, which was not carried forward. Anyone who depends on authorization plugins that introspect the request or response body to make access control decisions may be impacted.

Red Hat does not ship AuthZ plugin in any of the current container tools such as Podman, Buildah, Skopeo, and containernetworking-plugins, therefore, they are not affected.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

Technical Impact: Bypass Protection Mechanism; Gain Privileges or Assume Identity; Varies by Context

Attackers can bypass the security decision to access whatever is being protected. The consequences will depend on the associated functionality, but they can range from granting additional privileges to untrusted users to bypassing important security checks. Ultimately, this weakness may lead to exposure or modification of sensitive data, system crash, or execution of arbitrary code.
