CVE-2024-36357

Description

A flaw was found in AMD processors. An authenticated local attacker can exploit this transient execution vulnerability to cause information disclosure across privilege boundaries. By observing microarchitectural side-channel behavior, an attacker can infer sensitive data residing in the Level 1 Data (L1D) cache.

Statement

A moderate impact transient execution vulnerability was found in some AMD processors. An authenticated local attacker on a system with an affected processor could exploit this flaw by observing microarchitectural side-channel behavior to infer sensitive data residing in the Level 1 Data (L1D) cache, resulting in the disclosure of sensitive information across privilege boundaries. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is affected on systems equipped with the affected AMD processors, and fixes are being pursued through the kernel and linux-firmware components. The RHEL 6 and RHEL 7 Extended Lifecycle Support streams are out of support scope for this issue, and the delegated component assessment for Red Hat In-Vehicle OS determined its kernel and kernel-rt components not affected. Red Hat rates this flaw Moderate severity with CVSS 5.6 (CVSS:3.1/AV:L/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:N), consistent with the upstream rating; the severity reflects that exploitation requires local authenticated access and high attack complexity, with impact limited to confidentiality.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base, or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
