CVE-2024-35993

Description

A vulnerability was found in the Linux kernel's memory management system, specifically affecting the handling of hugetlb (huge page) memory. The issue arises from the folio_test_hugetlb() function, which can be misled by a concurrent folio split, potentially returning incorrect results for folios that do not belong to hugetlbfs. This can lead to problems in memory failure handling, compaction, and procfs, and may cause kernel crashes (oops) when CONFIG_DEBUG_VM is enabled.

Statement

Red Hat Enterprise Linux is not vulnerable to this CVE, as it does not affect the versions or configurations of the Linux kernel used in its distributions.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
