CVE-2024-35814
Description
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
swiotlb: Fix double-allocation of slots due to broken alignment handling
The Linux kernel CVE team has assigned CVE-2024-35814 to this issue.
Upstream advisory: https://lore.kernel.org/linux-cve-announce/2024051742-CVE-2024-35814-98c7@gregkh/T
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as having a Low severity impact because it primarily leads to a system crash or hang under specific virtual machine configurations utilizing restricted software I/O translation buffers. Exploitation requires driver-level memory allocations in guest environments, restricting the blast radius to a localized denial of service rather than arbitrary code execution or privilege escalation. Systems not configured with restricted bounce buffering are unaffected by this condition during standard operations.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)
Integrity,Availability,Confidentiality
Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands; Read Memory; Modify Memory
If the incorrect calculation is used in the context of memory allocation, then the software may create a buffer that is smaller or larger than expected. If the allocated buffer is smaller than expected, this could lead to an out-of-bounds read or write (CWE-119), possibly causing a crash, allowing arbitrary code execution, or exposing sensitive data.
