CVE-2024-26822

Description

A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's SMB (Server Message Block) client. In multi-user setups, the kernel fails to assign proper user and credential identifiers for automatically mounted shares when those parameters are not explicitly defined. As a result, automounted shares reuse the identification values from the parent mount instead of the active user. A local user could exploit this issue to access or modify data on network shares under another user's privileges.

Statement

Red Hat rates this vulnerability as Low impact because exploitation is restricted to authenticated local users and requires an uncommon configuration involving multi-user environments with dynamic SMB share mounting. The flaw cannot be triggered remotely and only affects scenarios where credential parameters are omitted during automated submounts, limiting unauthorized access strictly to shares accessible to the parent mount owner. Furthermore, default installations of Red Hat Enterprise Linux are unaffected, as the code change that introduced this defect was not incorporated into enterprise kernels.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
