CVE-2023-7356
Description
A flaw was found in the Linux kernel's Bluetooth subsystem. An adjacent attacker within Bluetooth range could exploit this flaw by broadcasting specially crafted Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) periodic advertisement packets. Because incoming advertisement data was copied into internal socket buffers without properly validating data length and service types, an attacker could trigger a buffer overflow. This vulnerability can lead to a system crash, resulting in a denial of service (DoS), or potentially allow arbitrary code execution.
Statement
This vulnerability is rated as Important because an unauthenticated adjacent attacker within wireless transmission range can trigger a kernel buffer overflow without user interaction, potentially causing a complete system denial of service or arbitrary kernel execution. In typical Red Hat Enterprise Linux server and cloud deployments, Bluetooth adapters are absent or disabled by default, which substantially curtails exposure. However, systems operating active Bluetooth Low Energy interfaces and processing periodic advertisement reports are directly vulnerable to nearby malicious broadcasts.
Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details
Info alert:Important note
CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).
The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)
Integrity,Confidentiality,Availability
Technical Impact: Modify Memory; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands
Buffer overflows often can be used to execute arbitrary code, which is usually outside the scope of the product's implicit security policy. This can often be used to subvert any other security service.
Availability
Technical Impact: Modify Memory; DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart; DoS: Resource Consumption (CPU)
Buffer overflows generally lead to crashes. Other attacks leading to lack of availability are possible, including putting the product into an infinite loop.
