CVE-2023-54218

Description

A data race was found in the Linux kernel's networking subsystem. In sock_recv_cmsgs(), the sk->sk_stamp field is read without using READ_ONCE(), while it can be concurrently written by another thread. This load-tearing issue was detected by KCSAN (Kernel Concurrency Sanitizer) during packet socket receive operations.

Statement

This is a theoretical data race detected by KCSAN that could result in reading a partially updated timestamp value. The practical impact is limited to potentially incorrect timestamp data being returned in control messages. There is no demonstrated crash or exploitable security vulnerability from this race condition.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.
