CVE-2022-48931

Description

From CVE.org

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: configfs: fix a race in configfs_{,un}register_subsystem() When configfs_register_subsystem() or configfs_unregister_subsystem() is executing link_group() or unlink_group(), it is possible that two processes add or delete list concurrently. Some unfortunate interleavings of them can cause kernel panic. One of cases is: A --> B --> C --> D A <-- B <-- C <-- D delete list_head *B | delete list_head *C --------------------------------|----------------------------------- configfs_unregister_subsystem | configfs_unregister_subsystem unlink_group | unlink_group unlink_obj | unlink_obj list_del_init | list_del_init __list_del_entry | __list_del_entry __list_del | __list_del // next == C | next->prev = prev | | next->prev = prev prev->next = next | | // prev == B | prev->next = next Fix this by adding mutex when calling link_group() or unlink_group(), but parent configfs_subsystem is NULL when config_item is root. So I create a mutex configfs_subsystem_mutex.

Statement

Following issue marked as moderate with "not affected" for Red Hat Enterprise Linux, as it is not vulnerable to this CVE. This is because the CVE does not impact the versions or configurations of the Linux kernel used in Red Hat's distributions. Additionally, some RHEL versions may be marked as "will not fix" due to the minimal impact of the issue, and no fix will be provided.

Mitigation

Mitigation for this issue is either not available or the currently available options do not meet the Red Hat Product Security criteria comprising ease of use and deployment, applicability to widespread installation base or stability.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

The following CVSS metrics and score provided are preliminary and subject to review.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Availability

Technical Impact: DoS: Resource Consumption (CPU); DoS: Resource Consumption (Memory); DoS: Resource Consumption (Other)

When a race condition makes it possible to bypass a resource cleanup routine or trigger multiple initialization routines, it may lead to resource exhaustion.

Availability

Technical Impact: DoS: Crash, Exit, or Restart; DoS: Instability

When a race condition allows multiple control flows to access a resource simultaneously, it might lead the product(s) into unexpected states, possibly resulting in a crash.

Confidentiality,Integrity

Technical Impact: Read Files or Directories; Read Application Data

When a race condition is combined with predictable resource names and loose permissions, it may be possible for an attacker to overwrite or access confidential data (CWE-59).

Access Control

Technical Impact: Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands; Gain Privileges or Assume Identity; Bypass Protection Mechanism

This can have security implications when the expected synchronization is in security-critical code, such as recording whether a user is authenticated or modifying important state information that should not be influenced by an outsider.
