In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: thermal: core: Fix TZ_GET_TRIP NULL pointer dereference Do not call get_trip_hyst() from thermal_genl_cmd_tz_get_trip() if the thermal zone does not define one.

Statement

This issue is fixed in RHEL-9.2 and above (including RHEL 8.10)

Please note that while RHEL-9 kernel-rt still appears as affected, it has been fixed in the same RHSA as RHEL-9 kernel. This is because from RHEL-9.3 onwards, the kernel and kernel-rt fixes are bundled together in a single errata.

NULL pointer dereferences usually result in the failure of the process unless exception handling (on some platforms) is available and implemented. Even when exception handling is being used, it can still be very difficult to return the software to a safe state of operation.

In rare circumstances, when NULL is equivalent to the 0x0 memory address and privileged code can access it, then writing or reading memory is possible, which may lead to code execution.
