In KDE Ark before 20.08.1, a crafted TAR archive with symlinks can install files outside the extraction directory, as demonstrated by a write operation to a user's home directory.

Mitigation

The way to mitigate this flaw is to pay attention to the contents of the archive in ark before extracting, to ensure that there are no improper symlinks, and heed the file overwrite warnings.

Red Hat CVSS v3 Score Explanation

Scope is unchanged because as the description states, it can extract to the current user's home dir. This is not a changed scope - a changed scoped would e.g. allow to extract to another user or root's home dir. Marked I:L because I created a file under the same name as that to be extracted first, and when I tried to extract using ark, ark popped up a message asking if I wanted to overwrite the file. Therefore, there is a very low risk to data integrity as it would require the user to accept overwriting the file. If the user didn't realize it was going into another dir, this could occur, but it's not very likely.
