CVE-2020-1748

Description

A flaw was found in Wildfly, where the WildFlySecurityManager checks were bypassed when using custom security managers, resulting in an improper authorization. This flaw leads to information exposure by unauthenticated access to secure resources.

Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) Score Details

Info alert:Important note

CVSS scores for open source components depend on vendor-specific factors (e.g. version or build chain). Therefore, Red Hat's score and impact rating can be different from NVD and other vendors. Red Hat remains the authoritative CVE Naming Authority (CNA) source for its products and services (see Red Hat classifications).

Red Hat CVSS v3 Score Explanation

AC:L -> AC:H The attack depends on the use of a custom security manager by the application developer, further extenuating conditions would also need to exist like specific configuration of the permissions on the protection domain, This means the attacker would require significant time and resource to target a specific application, this means the attack complexity is high.

C:H -> C:L & I:N -> I:L As this is not a complete security policy bypass and the application is still limited in scope, the impact to confidentiality is low, the attacker has access to some restricted information but does not have control over what that information is, the impact to integrity is also low as again some modification to data is possible but it is limited in scope.

Understanding the Weakness (CWE)

Confidentiality

Technical Impact: Read Application Data; Read Files or Directories

An attacker could read sensitive data, either by reading the data directly from a data store that is not properly restricted, or by accessing insufficiently-protected, privileged functionality to read the data.

Integrity

Technical Impact: Modify Application Data; Modify Files or Directories

An attacker could modify sensitive data, either by writing the data directly to a data store that is not properly restricted, or by accessing insufficiently-protected, privileged functionality to write the data.

Access Control

Technical Impact: Gain Privileges or Assume Identity; Execute Unauthorized Code or Commands

When access control checks are not applied consistently - or not at all - an attacker could gain privileges and execute unauthorized code or commands by modifying or reading critical data directly, or by accessing insufficiently-protected, privileged functionality.
