CVE-2020-10740

Description

A flaw was found in Wildfly. A remote deserialization attack is possible in the Enterprise Application Beans (EJB) due to lack of validation/filtering capabilities in wildfly. The highest threat from this vulnerability is to data confidentiality and integrity as well as system availablity.

Mitigation

There is currently no known mitigation for this issue.

Red Hat CVSS v3 Score Explanation

There are sufficient factors beyond the attacker's control: the EJB application being invoked would need to package or include Apache commons-beanutils library in its classpath for the attack to successfully be accomplished. Also, the knowledge of the EJB applications interface and path that is being invoked may be required for successful attack. This set of conditions, suggests that it reflects AC:H rather than AC:L.

Attackers can modify unexpected objects or data that was assumed to be safe from modification. Deserialized data or code could be modified without using the provided accessor functions, or unexpected functions could be invoked.

If a function is making an assumption on when to terminate, based on a sentry in a string, it could easily never terminate.

The consequences can vary widely, because it depends on which objects or methods are being deserialized, and how they are used. Making an assumption that the code in the deserialized object is valid is dangerous and can enable exploitation. One example is attackers using gadget chains to perform unauthorized actions, such as generating a shell.
