Description

cdf_read_property_info in cdf.c in file through 5.37 does not restrict the number of CDF_VECTOR elements, which allows a heap-based buffer overflow (4-byte out-of-bounds write).
Statement
This issue affects the file package as shipped with Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8. However, this flaw has been rated as having a security impact of Moderate because it is only exploitable if the 32bit version is used, for example when an application uses the 32bit version of libmagic.so.

Buffer overflows often can be used to execute arbitrary code, which is usually outside the scope of a program's implicit security policy. For example, object methods in C++ are generally implemented using function pointers. Even in C programs, there is often a global offset table used by the underlying runtime.
