CVE-2019-15605

Description

A flaw was found in the Node.js code where a specially crafted HTTP(s) request sent to a Node.js server failed to properly process the HTTP(s) headers, resulting in a request smuggling attack. An attacker can use this flaw to alter a request sent as an authenticated user if the Node.js server is deployed behind a proxy server that reuses connections.

Exploitation of the flaws requires a proxy server be deployed and to handle the requests in a different way to a NodeJS HTTP Server. A victim needs to send a request to the server in order to vulnerable. While availability is impacted, the victim should see error responses to some requests, not a permanent and persistent denial of availability.

An attacker could create HTTP messages to exploit a number of weaknesses including 1) the message can trick the web server to associate a URL with another URL's webpage and caching the contents of the webpage (web cache poisoning attack), 2) the message can be structured to bypass the firewall protection mechanisms and gain unauthorized access to a web application, and 3) the message can invoke a script or a page that returns client credentials (similar to a Cross Site Scripting attack).
