  • Successfull install and registration but can't boot RHEL7 Beta

    Posted on

See step 25 below for the MAJOR PROBLEM. Apart from that, I was able to install and register, with a few MINOR PROBLEMs marked below. The test case is dual booting F20 and RHEL 7 Beta on a laptop, using a Windows desktop for downloads, etc.

    1. Download liveusb-creator-3.12.0-setup.exe (due to working on a Windows machine)

    2. Install liveusb-creator-3.12.0 on the Windows machine

    3. Download Fedora-Live-Desktop-x86_64-20-1.iso

    4. Use liveusb-creator-3.12.0 to burn Fedora-Live-Desktop-x86_64-20-1.iso to a bootable USB stick

    5. Boot the test laptop from this USB stick and install F20

    6. During F20 install, choose to have a single 80GB primary partition for / with no swap partition

    7. Request a spare 20GB primary partition (e.g. /dev/sda3) mounted as /iso

    8. Boot F20 for the first time and do yum update, get 3.12.6 kernel

    9. Download rhel-7-public-beta-x86_64-dvd.iso and copy the iso (unexpanded) to /iso

    10. Also download rhel-7-public-beta-x86_64-boot.iso

    11. Use liveusb-creator-3.12.0 to burn rhel-7-public-beta-x86_64-boot.iso to a USB stick

    12. Boot from the rhel-7-public-beta-x86_64-boot USB stick

    13. Choose /dev/sda3 as the source of the install, and pick the rhel-7-public-beta-x86_64-dvd.iso as the iso to be used

    14. Request a single 100GB partition for / on the hard drive as the destination of the install and no swap partition

    15. MINOR PROBLEM: Reboot button at end of RHEL 7 Beta install didn't do a reboot

    16. Manually power off and reboot

    17. RHEL 7 Beta automatically showed up at top of boot list, no manual tweaking of grub required

    18. Accept license terms

    19. MINOR PROBLEM: Could not reach subscription.rhn.redhat.com to register

    20. Log in for first time and manually start wired networking (which is probably what prevented registration)

    21. Attempt to register again

    22. MINOR PROBLEM: Had to manually key in subscription.rhn.redhat.com as address for registration

    23. MINOR PROBLEM: Message about missing SSL certificate

    24. Problem solved by going in through Subscription Manager and successfully registered

    25. MAJOR PROBLEM: F20 now boots okay, but booting RHEL 7 Beta results in Code: Bad RIP value followed by kernel panic
