KVM and virt-manager

When I log into my workstation via TightVNC and type virt-manager into a terminal window - when the GUI comes up all of my virtual machines come up as "shut down." They are all up and running before I bring up the GUI. Bringing up virt-manager is what is shutting them down. How can I keep this from happening?
