redhat 7 ldap auth with nslcd

I've setup ldap auth through nslcd and it seems to be able to connect to the haproxy in front our ldap servers, but I can't tell with the logs what is happening after that.
One issue might be that our ldap servers behind the haproxy have expired ssl certs? Any way to find out what is going on and what might preventing this from working?
