Workaround solution for Leap second on Redhat 5.3/4.0 without upgrade Linux kernel

Hi guys

Is there any workaround solution for Leap second on Redhat 5.3/4.0 without upgrade Linux kernel?
Now we still have some old server working on field, and didn't want to upgrade the Linux kernel for leap second.
Since it is risks if upgrade Linux kernel fail.

I find an article in link https://access.redhat.com/articles/199563
To stop NTP and switch to slew mode during leap second.
Does it work?
If not, any workaround?
