Release 1.3 of Subscription Asset Manager

Description

Red Hat Subscription Asset Manager 1.3 is now available. This release adds
several notable enhancements and fixes multiple bugs.

Red Hat Subscription Asset Manager acts as an on-premise service to manage
subscription information and works as a proxy for software updates on
client machines.

This release includes these important new features:

• Previously, subscriptions for physical systems were matched only for

socket counts. Now, subscriptions can also be matched based on cores or
RAM.

• Each product has an identifier with it that is used within the

subscription service to help track installed products. Subscription Asset
Manager now displays that product ID and product versions for a system on
a new "Content" tab for systems.

• A new "Refresh" button allows any updated manifest to be downloaded from

the Portal automatically without ever having to log into the Customer
Portal.

• Systems can now be organized into system groups. System groups provide a

consistent way to organize systems within an organization and for features
such as activation keys and access control. IMPORTANT: System groups
replace environments. Any existing environments in the organization will
be removed when SAM is upgraded.

• The way that subscription pools are calculated has been updated to

provide more flexibility in subscription relationships to each other and to
the system to which they are attached. This is called "instanced-based
subscriptions," and each unit which requires a subscription is an instance.
A virtual system is an instance, whereas for physical system instances can
be a socket pair, cores, or RAM. For physical systems, subscriptions are
consumed from the pool in a set increment called the instance multiplier,
which has a value of 2. The pool is dynamically calculated by taking the
number of total subscriptions and multiplying it by the instance
multiplier, then applying it to systems. If there are 15 subscriptions
purchased, there are 30 subscriptions in the pool (15 x 2). IMPORTANT: If
any subscriptions will be purchased after October 1, 2013, those
subscriptions will use the new instance-based model. All SAM servers must
be upgraded to version 1.3 to use those new subscriptions. Also, it is
strongly recommended that the Red Hat Subscription Manager packages also be
updated on the client systems.

Subscription Asset Manager 1.3 also includes two significant tech preview
features:

• This version of SAM introduces new reporting packages which can return

information on multiple organizations at once, rather than a single
organization. Additionally, this enhanced reporting can be used to
integrate Satellite 5.6 and SAM 1.3 systems and to provide more
fine-grained reports for Satellite systems.

• Now, subordinate or chained distributors can be created underneath a

master Subscription Asset Manager organization. This is essentially an
instance within an instance. The parent organization attaches
subscriptions to the child organization and creates a manifest on-premise
rather than requiring all SAM servers to be registered with the Customer
Portal.
