Updated binutils packages that fix one bug are now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.5 Extended Update Support.

Description

The binutils packages provide a collection of binary utilities for the manipulation of object code in various object file formats. It includes the ar, as, gprof, ld, nm, objcopy, objdump, ranlib, readelf, size, strings, strip, and addr2line utilities.

This update fixes the following bug:

• Previously, the "strip" tool created an invalid binary file if the file was originally produced by tools that use a later version of the BFD library than "strip". As a consequence running the resulting binary file failed and generated an error message about an unresolvable relocation. BFD has been modified to report situations where it cannot recognize its future features instead of damaging the code that contains these features. As a result, "strip" now generates an error message and aborts in this situation. (BZ#1660558)

Users of binutils are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which fix this bug.
