Topic

An updated virtio-win package that fixes two bugs and adds various enhancements is now available for the Supplementary channel of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.

Description

The virtio-win package provides paravirtualized network drivers for most Microsoft Windows operating systems. Paravirtualized drivers are virtualization-aware drivers used by fully virtualized guests running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Fully virtualized guests using the paravirtualized drivers gain significantly better I/O performance than fully virtualized guests running without the drivers.

This update fixes the following bugs:

  • Previously, it was possible to install incorrect versions of virtio drivers, especially when running an older Windows operating system. This sometimes caused the guest to terminate unexpectedly with a stop error, also known as the "Blue Screen of Death", if the particular driver and Windows versions were incompatible. This update adds target OS version information to driver files, which enables Windows to automatically select the best driver when pointed to the root of the virtio-win CD image. Installing an incompatible driver version manually is also no longer possible, as Windows now presents the user with an error message if installation is attempted. (BZ#1325078)
  • Prior to this update, the IOCTL_GET_INFORMATION I/O control call did not return the actual size of the data if the size of the passed buffer was not large enough. As a consequence, applications such as vioser-test were not able to query file size. This update introduces updated IOCTL_GET_INFORMATION I/O control code, which fixes the bug. Note that the previous I/O control code is still supported for backward compatibility, and is now named IOCTL_GET_INFORMATION_BUFFERED in the source files. (BZ#1293249)

In addition, this update adds the following enhancements:

  • This update introduces the receive segment coalescing (RSC) feature for the virtio-net driver. This allows the driver to report coalesced transmission control protocol (TCP) segments to the OS. Note that the support for RSC is included in virtio-net for Windows Server 2012 and later versions. (BZ#950611, BZ#1340571)
  • The vioscsi.sys file is now compatible with Microsoft Cluster Services, which enables the Windows virtio-scsi driver to support Windows Server Failover Clustering (WSFC) using shared storage. As a result, vioscsi.sys can pass all tests in the "Validate a Configuration" process. (BZ#1219841)
  • The virtio-win package now contains the updated Windows 10 drivers in the virtual floppy drive (VFD) files, and the driver thus does not have to be downloaded manually. (BZ#1328275)
  • This update adds support for version 1.0 of the virtio protocol to the following drivers:
  • virtio-rng
  • virtio-balloon
  • virtio-serial
  • virtio-net
  • virtio-scsi
  • virtio-block

Improvements in virtio 1.0 include better resource utilization and better performance. Note that if the virtual device supports virtio 1.0 as well as the older protocol (referred to as virtio 0.9.5, 0.9, or legacy), the drivers will use virtio 1.0. (BZ#1315985, BZ#1315984, BZ#1304041, BZ#1303988, BZ#1304044, BZ#1304049)

  • In addition to supporting single-queue mode, the vioscsi driver is now fully functional in multi-queue mode. (BZ#1210166)
  • The virtio-win package now contains drivers for Windows Server 2016. A new directory has been added to the drivers directory hierarchy to reflect this change. The Windows Server 2016 drivers can be found in the /usr/share/virtio-win/drivers/amd64/Win2016 file, and they have also been added to the VFD and ISO files. (BZ#1293249)
  • This update implements the "guest-get-vcpus" command in the Windows guest agent. "guest-get-vcpus" returns the list of virtual CPUs known to the guest operating system. (BZ#1257511)

Users of virtio-win are advised to upgrade to this updated package, which fixes these bugs and adds these enhancements.
