Topic

An updated OVMF package that fixes several bugs and adds various enhancements is now available for the Supplementary channel of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.

Description

OVMF (Open Virtual Machine Firmware) is a project to enable UEFI support for Virtual Machines. This package contains a sample 64-bit UEFI firmware for QEMU and KVM.

The OVMF package has been upgraded to upstream git commit c9e5618, dated April 14 2015, which provides a number of bug fixes and enhancements over the previous version. (BZ#1211337)

This update also fixes the following bug:

  • Previously, OVMF used version 3.0 of the SMBIOS entry point. However, this caused guests with less recent operating systems, such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.6, to be unable to parse the SMBIOS tables. This update sets OVMF to use SMBIOS entry point version 2.8, which ensures that SMBIOS tables can be parsed as expected on older systems. (BZ#1232876)

In addition, this update adds the following enhancement:

  • OVMF now supports the "Enable boot menu" option in the virt-manager application and the underlying "bootmenu" element in the libvirt domain XML. If this option is selected when booting a virtual machine (VM) using OVMF, the VM now displays a progress bar before booting. If the user presses the ESC key before the progress bar disappears, the VM switches to the UEFI Configuration utility. (BZ#1170507)

Users of OVMF are advised to upgrade to this updated package, which fixes these bugs and adds these enhancements.
