RHBA-2015:1883 - Bug Fix Advisory

  • Overview

Synopsis

Red Hat Ceph Storage 1.3.0 bug fix and enhancement update

Type/Severity

Bug Fix Advisory

Topic

Red Hat Ceph Storage 1.3.0 that fixes several bugs and adds various enhancements is now available for Ubuntu 14.04.

Description

Red Hat Ceph Storage is a massively scalable, open, software-defined storage platform that combines the most stable version of the Ceph storage system with a Ceph management platform, deployment tools, and support services.

This update fixes the following bugs:

  • When reopening log files, Object Storage Devices (OSDs) could write data to an incorrect file descriptor. Consequently, log entries were lost, or were written to a file descriptor that was opened by the filestore. The latter case could cause data corruption. This bug has been fixed. (BZ#1249235)
  • When the optional RADOS Block Device (RBD) feature was enabled on an image, an attempt to write within the last 64 GB interval of the image beyond the first 64 GB on the disk caused the Ceph cluster to terminate unexpectedly. In addition, the object map became invalidated. A patch has been applied to fix this bug, and the Ceph cluster no longer crashes in the described situation. (BZ#1253327)
  • The upstart init system restarted Ceph daemons too frequently, up to five times in 30 seconds. This could lead to startup respawn loops that masked other issues, such as disk state problems. This update adjusts the upstart settings to restart the daemons three times in 30 minutes. (BZ#1262976)

In addition, this update adds the following enhancements:

  • This new version provides optimization that reduces CPU needed per operation. This improvement is relevant to fast hardware, such as solid-state drives (SSDs). (BZ#1207322)
  • A new erasure-coding scheme is now supported. The scheme stores certain data blocks to reduce the I/O operations required to recover from single OSD failures. (BZ#1207327)
  • This update adds two new configuration options, "osd_scrub_begin_hour" and "osd_scrub_end_hour", which allow the user to set hours during which scrubbing can be performed. (BZ#1207329)
  • Ceph Block Device now supports allocation and cache hinting. (BZ#1207348, BZ#1207353)
  • Ceph Block Device now supports a new copy-on-read feature, which improves performance for certain workloads. The copy-on-read feature is disabled by default. To enable it, set the "rbd_clone_copy_on_read=true" Boolean in the Ceph configuration file. (BZ#1207354)
  • Ceph Block Device now supports a new object map function that tracks which parts of the image are allocated. This function is disabled by default. To enable it, set the "rbd default format" option to "2" and the "rbd default features" option to "X", where "X" is the sum of the feature bits. (BZ#1207357)
  • Ceph Block Device now supports a new read-ahead function, which reads first 50 MB of sequential data to accelerate kernel booting. (BZ#1207358)
  • With this update, the Civetweb server is now used instead of the Apache server as a back end for the Ceph Object Gateway. (BZ#1209975)

Users of Red Hat Ceph Storage are advised to upgrade to this updated version, which fixes these bugs and adds these enhancements.
