Topic

Updated grubby packages that fix several bugs and add one enhancement are now
available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.

Description

The grubby packages provide grubby, a command-line tool for displaying and
editing GRUB (GRand Unified Bootloader) configuration files.

This update fixes the following bugs:

• Previously, the manual pages for grub2 boot loader stated incorrect location

about the configuration file and the default boot loader on the supported Red
Hat Enterprise Linux architectures. The manual pages have been updated to
contain correct information about the configuration file and the default boot
loader. (BZ#1001664)

• Prior to this update, while adding LILO entries the $VERSION variable was used

to set labels on boot images. As a consequence, adding multiple boot images with
the same version on zipl-based platforms failed with a duplicate entry error.
With this update, the grubby packages have been updated to use the "--banner"
option in the boot entry. As a result, zipl-based systems can now add boot
images that use the same version. (BZ#1032048)

• Prior to this update, when installing new kernels, grubby used arguments of

"linux" and "initrd" regardless of the system's architecture. Consequently,
grubby could create the grub.cfg file on AArch64 with non-EFI (Extensible
Firmware Interface) arguments, which are unsupported on this architecture. With
this update, only EFI arguments are passed to grub.cfg on AArch64. As a result,
the system can boot as expected. (BZ#1081269)

In addition, this update adds the following enhancement:

• With this update, a debugging boot entry has been added to the /etc/grub.cfg

file by default. It is no longer necessary to enable debugging manually.

Users of grubby are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which fix
these bugs and add this enhancement.

Solution

Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.
