Updated valgrind packages that fix several bugs and add various enhancements are
now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.

Description

The valgrind packages provide the Valgrind programming tool that helps detect
memory-management problems in programs. Valgrind is used for debugging memory,
detecting memory leaks, and profiling.

The valgrind packages have been upgraded to upstream version 3.10.0, which
provides a number of bug fixes and enhancements over the previous version. The
important fixes and enhancements include:

• Support for the 64-bit ARM Architecture (AArch64 ARMv8) and for the

little-endian variant of IBM Power Systems have been added.

• The --db-attach option is now deprecated and will be removed in the next

feature valgrind packages release. The built-in Valgrind gdbserver capabilities,
see the --vgdb options, are superior and should be used instead.

• Error messages that include stack traces can now show inline function calls if

the DWARF debug information format is available. These can also be used in
suppressions.

• Error messages concerning dubious arguments (for example, to malloc or calloc)

now include a stack trace and can be used in suppressions.

• The C++ demangler has been updated for better C++11 support.
• The Valgrind gdbserver functionality now supports display of thread local

variables and storage (__thread). Three new monitor commands have been added to
Valgrind: "v.info location [address]" to show more information about an address,
"v.info stats" to show various Valgrind core and tool statistics, and "v.set
hostvisibility", which allows Valgrind gdbserver to provide access to Valgrind
internal host status and memory. There is also a new valgrind command line
option, "--vgdb-stop-at=[event1],[event2],...", which allows the user to ask the
Valgrind gdbserver to stop at the start of program execution, at the end of the
program execution, and when valgrind aborts on internal errors.

• In the Valgrind memcheck tool, the client code can now selectively disable and

re-enable reporting of invalid address errors in specific ranges using new
client requests. In addition, more accurate checking of system call parameters
that use uninitialized fields in structures has been added. Finally, it is now
possible to disable the mismatched checking of memory deallocation using the
"free" function via the new "--show-mismatched-frees=no|yes" flag, with the
default value remaining "yes".

• In the Valgrind helgrind tool, more information about race conditions and

locks is now shown in error messages as the new Valgrind gdbserver monitor
command gives the list of locks, their location, and their status. (BZ#1097769)

This update also fixes the following bug:

• Previously, programs that were explicitly compiled against the valgrind.h

header file to include Valgrind client requests for 32-bit PowerPC binaries
(ppc32), but not 64-bit PowerPC binaries (ppc64), could unexpectedly clobber a
register (r0) causing subtle bugs. The latest rebase of the valgrind packages
(3.10.0) fixes the bug in the client request magic instruction sequence for
ppc32. Code needs to be recompiled for ppc32 against the new valgrind.h header
file to fix the bug. Code that has not been rebuilt might contain the bug, which
Valgrind now detects and returns a warning message. (BZ#1141166)

Users of valgrind are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which fix
these bugs and add these enhancements.

Solution

Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.
