Topic

Updated linuxptp packages that fix several bugs and add various enhancements are
now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.

Description

The Linux PTP project is a software implementation of the Precision Time
Protocol (PTP) according to IEEE standard 1588 for Linux. These packages provide
a robust implementation of the standard and use the most relevant and modern
Application Programming Interfaces (API) offered by the Linux kernel. Supporting
legacy APIs and other platforms is not a goal.

The linuxptp packages have been upgraded to upstream version 1.4, which provides
a number of bug fixes and enhancements over the previous version. Specifically,
this rebase adds an adaptive servo based on linear regression, includes
improvements for 802.1AS clocks, fixes bugs in delay measurement, and adds new
configuration options for the phc2sys utility automatic mode. (BZ#1108795)

In addition, this update adds the following enhancement:

• With this update, the linuxptp utility supports synchronization of the system

clock to multiple time sources, Precision Time Protocol (PTP) domains and
Network Time Protocol (NTP) servers, which increases resilience to PTP and
Network Interface Card/Controller (NIC) failures. A new program called
timemaster has been added, which uses the ptp4l and phc2sys utilities in
combination with the chronyd or ntpd daemons to synchronize the system clock
with NTP and PTP time sources. The PTP time is provided by phc2sys and ptp4l
using SHM reference clocks to chronyd and ntpd, which can compare all time
sources and use the best sources to synchronize the system clock. (BZ#1085580)

Users of linuxptp are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which fix
these bugs and add these enhancements.

Solution

Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.
