Updated xorg-x11, libdrm, and mesa packages that fix several bugs and add
various enhancements are now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.

Description

X.Org is an open source implementation of the X Window System. It provides the
basic low-level functionality that full-fledged graphical user interfaces are
designed upon. The libdrm packages provide a runtime library for the Direct
Rendering Manager. Mesa provides a 3D graphics API that is compatible with Open
Graphics Library (OpenGL). It also provides hardware-accelerated drivers for
many popular graphics chips.

This update fixes the following bugs:

• OpenGL depth buffers were not handled properly on big-endian platforms. As a

consequence, a number of graphical applications displayed a blank window instead
of the intended output. Now, OpenGL depth buffers are handled correctly on
big-endian platforms and the described problems no longer occur. (BZ#1112753)

• The LLVM engine for Mesa in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 did not recognize IBM

POWER8 systems as compatible with IBM POWER7 systems. As a consequence, OpenGL
applications, including gnome-shell, failed to initialize on POWER8 machines.
The LLVM engine has been updated to properly recognize POWER8 systems, which
fixes the problem. (BZ#1091289)

• Input events and the internal timekeeping of the X server used different

system clocks, which could cause touchpad click actions to be delayed. This
update modifies the synaptics driver to use the same system timer as the core
server, and touchpad clicks are no longer delayed. In addition, the three-finger
tap emulation of a middle-click is now detected more reliably. (BZ#1138484,

• The X server in some cases did not properly synchronize the keyboard LED state

during suspend or other hot-plug events. Consequently, the NumLock and CapsLock
LED lights on the keyboard sometimes did not correspond with the NumLock and
CapsLock status of the system. The LED synchronization has been corrected and
the NumLock and CapsLock LEDs now reliably reflect the system status.

• For certain GPU cards, a number of input events were not translated correctly

after using the RandR tool to rotate the screen. As a consequence, the mouse
pointer position did not reflect where mouse clicks were sent, and it was not
possible to interact with the graphical desktop. Now, input events are
translated correctly after using RandR rotation, and the desktop stays usable.

• The Xephyr tool did not calculate the DPI of its root window correctly, which

caused fonts in Mozilla Firefox and other applications to be too small to read
when run inside the X sandbox window. With this update, Xephyr calculates the
sandbox window DPI properly, which prevents the described problem. In addition,
resizable Xephyr windows now use the specified initial size more reliably.

In addition, this update adds the following enhancements:

• Updated Synaptics drivers have been implemented which introduce

software-emulated button click areas for clickpads on Lenovo *40 hardware. This
provides for a smoother user experience while using the Lenovo *40 clickpads.
Note that this enhancement requires the kernel-3.10.0-140.el7 version or later
to function properly. (BZ#1093050)

• The Xorg server has been linked as a Position-Independent Executable (PIE),

which enables additional address space randomization. This increases the
difficulty of successfully exploiting buffer overflows and improves the security
of X server. (BZ#1092541)

• Hardware 3D support for the Intel Generation 8 graphics chips, which are a

part of the 5th Generation Intel Core Processors, has been added to Mesa.

• Mesa's LLVM engine has been upgraded to version 3.5, which adds support for

the little-endian variant of IBM Power Systems architecture to Mesa.

These packages also include a number of other bug fixes and enhancements. For
additional details, see the "Bugs Fixed" section below.

Users of xorg-x11, libdrm, and mesa are advised to upgrade to these updated
packages, which fix these bugs and add these enhancements.

Solution

Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.
