Topic

Updated binutils packages that fix one bug and add one enhancement are now
available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.

Description

The binutils packages provide a set of binary utilities, including "ar" (for
creating, modifying and extracting from archives), "as" (a family of GNU
assemblers), "gprof" (for displaying call graph profile data), "ld" (the GNU
linker), "nm" (for listing symbols from object files), "objcopy" (for copying
and translating object files), "objdump" (for displaying information from object
files), "ranlib" (for generating an index for the contents of an archive),
"readelf" (for displaying detailed information about binary files), "size" (for
listing the section sizes of an object or archive file), "strings" (for listing
printable strings from files), "strip" (for discarding symbols), and "addr2line"
(for converting addresses to file and line).

This update fixes the following bug:

• Previously, the ld linker could overwrite a valid SONAME field with an empty

string in a DT_NEEDED record without checking whether the field was empty. As a
consequence, certain programs were linked but unable to execute, because symbols
from some libraries were not loaded and the programs could not find the library.
With this update, ld has been fixed to check that SONAME is non-NULL before
writing to DT_NEEDED, and the described problem no longer occurs. (BZ#1128280)

In addition, this update adds the following enhancement:

• The binutils utilities now support Intel 512-bit Advanced Vector Extensions

(AVX-512), namely Vector Length Extensions (AVX-512VL), Byte and Word
Instructions (AVX-512BW), Doubleword and Quadword Instructions (AVX-512DQ), as
well as Intel Software Guard Extensions (Intel SGX). (BZ#1140375)

Users of binutils are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which fix
this bug and add this enhancement.

Solution

Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.
