Topic

Updated OpenStack Compute packages that resolve two issues and add one
enhancement are now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack
Platform 5.0 (Icehouse) for RHEL 6.

Description

Red Hat Enterprise Linux OpenStack Platform provides the facilities for
building a private or public infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) cloud
running on commonly available physical hardware. This advisory updates the
OpenStack Compute service.

OpenStack Compute (nova) launches and schedules large networks of virtual
machines, creating a redundant and scalable cloud computing platform.
Compute provides the software, control panels, and APIs required to
orchestrate a cloud, including running virtual machine instances and
controlling access through users and projects.

This update addresses the following issues:

  • The absence of some required packaging operations prevented novncproxy and

spicehtml5proxy from restarting upon upgrade. This update adds those required
operatings; as such, the novncproxy and spicehtml5proxy services now restart as
expected after upgrading.

  • Previously, the Compute service only queried local disk statistics on Compute

nodes, which are irrelevant when ephemeral disks are stored in RBD. This made it
possible for the scheduler to prevent an instance from being scheduled when the
total disk usage of instances already running on the node exceeded the total
disk capacity as reported by the hypervisor driver. With this update, the
Compute service now correctly queries Ceph for actual disk usage statistics.

In addition, with this update Copy-on-Write cloning for RBD-backed disks is now
supported. As such, the Compute service no longer needs to download a glance
image to local disk and then copy it again to RBD. Rather, disks can now be
efficiently created directly in the Ceph system, thereby speeding up the
creation of instances and, in the process, saving bandwidth and disk space.
