Topic

Updated scl-utils packages that fix several bugs and add one
enhancement are now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.

Description

The scl-utils packages provide a runtime utility and RPM packaging
macros for packaging Software Collections. Software Collections allow
users to concurrently install multiple versions of the same RPM packages
on the system. Using the scl utility, users may enable specific versions
of RPMs, which are installed into the /opt directory.

This update fixes the following bugs:

• In previous versions of scl-utils, the working directory was changed

during package builds, which caused complications to package maintainers.
These complications ranged from mild inconveniences to build failures if
the code in the spec file worked with the working directory. This bug has
been fixed, and the working directory no longer changes during the build
time. (BZ#1029515)

• This update introduces a new way to call the "scl enable" command.

The scl utility now supports the double dash as a separator between
collections and the command; using the separator makes calling the
command more convenient. (BZ#1029517)

• When building SCL noarch metapackages on a 64-bit machine, the build

failed with an error message. To fix this bug, the "%ifarch" conditionals
have been changed, and affected packages are now built correctly
(BZ#1029516)

• Previously, it was impossible to specify runtime dependencies between

collections. For example, if one collection depended on another, the user
had to enable both of them manually. This update introduces a feature in
which a collection has a way to enable another collection implicitly
during startup. (BZ#874417)

• Previously, scl-utils did not respect the "%define debug_package %{nil}"

line in the ~/.rpmmacros file, which instructs a package not to place
debugging information into a separate "debuginfo" package whenever a
package is built. With this update, the rpm macros get no longer
overwritten, and the user can now disable the stripping of binaries
and libs and disable generation of a debuginfo subpackage using
"%define debug_package %{nil}" in a rpm spec file. (BZ#1071834)

• Previously, the *-runtime package of every Software Collection owned

a number of directories including the /opt/rh/*/root/usr/lib recursive
directory. However, the /rpm/javadoc.req file was owned by other
packages as well. With this update, javadoc.req belongs to

• -collection1-scldevel, and *-runtime only owns the containing directory,

thus fixing the bug. (BZ#1133831)

In addition, this update adds the following enhancement:

• Support for SCLs exported over NFS has been improved by allowing the

"scl register" command. Now, when a directory with a Software Collection
is mounted using NFS, by running "scl register" the user informs
scl-utils about this directory, and scl-utils stores this information in
the /etc/scl/ directory. (BZ#1099394)

Users of scl-utils are advised to upgrade to these updated packages,
which fix these bugs and add this enhancement.

Solution

Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.
