Topic

An updated tar package that fixes several bugs is now available for Red Hat
Enterprise Linux 5.

Description

The GNU tar program saves many files together in one archive and can restore
individual files (or all of the files) from that archive.

This update fixes the following bugs:

  • Prior to this update, if the disk space limit was reached while extracting

files from a tar archive, random data was created on the file system. This
unintended behavior has been corrected in this update. (BZ#643111)

  • Prior to this update, tar terminated with a core dump when trying to update a

tar archive that was compressed using an external compression program. With this
update, this problem has been corrected so that tar now displays an error
message when trying to update this archive. (BZ#675693)

  • Prior to this update, the option "--no-overwrite-dir" was not documented in

the tar(1) manual page. This problem has been corrected so that the option is
now properly documented. (BZ#698618)

All users are advised to upgrade to this updated tar package, which fixes these
bugs.

relevant to your system have been applied.
