Topic

Updated dump packages that resolve an issue are now available.

Description

The dump package contains both dump and restore commands. The dump command
examines files in a file system, determines which ones need to be backed
up, and copies those files to a specified disk, tape, or other storage
medium. The restore command performs the inverse function of dump; it can
restore a full backup of a file system. Subsequent incremental backups can
then be layered on top of the full backup. Single files and directory
subtrees may also be restored from full or partial backups.

These updated dump packages fix the following bug:

  • when using dump to back up files to a tape drive, if a single file

spanned two or more partitions, then attempting to restore or retrieve that
file resulted in a failed md5 checksum and file corruption. With this
update, files which span multiple partitions are able to be successfully
restored and retrieved without file corruption.

Additionally, it was discovered during the fixing of this issue that the
Quick File Access index file suffered from corruption due to a mis-mapping
between inodes and physical tape positions. This issue has been addressed
in this update and the Quick File Access index file is now created
correctly. (BZ#563556)

All users of dump are advised to upgrade to these updated packages, which
resolve this issue.

Solution

Before applying this update, make sure that all previously-released
errata relevant to your system have been applied.

This update is available via Red Hat Network. Details on how to use
