SysVinit bug fix update

Bug Fix Advisory

Topic

An updated sysVinit package that fixes various bugs is now available.

Description

The SysVinit package contains a group of processes that control the basic
functions of your system. SysVinit includes the init program, which is the
first program started by the Linux kernel when the system boots. The init
program then controls the starting up and shutting down of all other programs.

This updated SysVinit package includes fixes for the following bugs:

  • a conflict between nss_ldap and SysVinit that caused segmentation faults

in LDAP servers upon shutdown has been fixed. With these updated packages,
systems running nss_ldap shut down cleanly, thus resolving the problem.

  • the 'telinit u' command now works properly in runlevels 0 (halt) and 6

(reboot).

  • the manual page for the wall(1) command has been changed to reflect

accurately the maximum length of messages, which is 22 lines.

All users of SysVinit are advised to upgrade to this updated package, which
resolves these issues.

Solution

Before applying this update, make sure that all previously-released
errata relevant to your system have been applied.

This update is available via Red Hat Network. Details on how to use
the Red Hat Network to apply this update are available at
