Bug Fix Advisory

Red Hat Lightspeed patch analysis

Identify and remediate systems affected by this advisory.

View affected systems

Topic

Updated e2fsprogs packages that fix various bugs are now available.

Description

The e2fsprogs package contains a number of utilities for creating,
checking, modifying, and correcting any inconsistencies in second
extended (ext2) filesystems. E2fsprogs contains e2fsck (used to
repair filesystem inconsistencies after an unclean shutdown), mke2fs
(used to initialize a partition to contain an empty ext2 filesystem),
debugfs (used to examine the internal structure of a filesystem, to
manually repair a corrupted filesystem, or to create test cases for
e2fsck), tune2fs (used to modify filesystem parameters), and most of
the other core ext2fs filesystem utilities.

  • Several defects were discovered by the Coverity source code checker,

which could result in memory leaks, segfaults, or memory corruption.

  • The dump_unused and lsdel commands in debugfs cause segfaults if no

filesystem is open.

  • The logdump command in debugfs could hang when following symlinks in /dev

while looking for a log device.

  • There is a potential problem in e2fsck where a corrupt journal can write

a bad superblock to the backups.

  • A corrupted extended attribute could cause e2fsck to dereference bad

memory and crash.

  • There is a problem with byte-swapping fast symlinks inodes that contain

extended attributes.

Users are advised to upgrade to these updated e2fsprogs packages, which
resolve these issues.
