RHBA-2003:406 - Bug Fix Advisory

  • Overview

Synopsis

Updated XFree86 packages are available

Type/Severity

Bug Fix Advisory

Topic

Updated XFree86 packages that include many bug fixes are now available.

Description

XFree86 is an open source implementation of the X Window System.

This update synchronizes XFree86 with the latest upstream bug fixes from
the stable branch of the XFree86 CVS, and includes many new Red Hat bug
fixes and enhancments, the most important of which include:

  • Fix for crash on IA64 due to wrong setjmp buffer alignment
  • Fix DRM_CAS on IA64 as used by the DRI
  • Fix for DRI locking deadlock on IA64 architecture
  • Close freetype fontfile filehandle in mkfontscale; this prevents

problems caused by large numbers of simultaneously open files

  • Improvements to the video mode pruning code in the server
  • Fix some i830+ VT switch/exit crashes
  • Fix an RandR Extension (Resize and Rotate Extension) refresh rate

rounding error

  • Fix for a SEGV in the vidmode extension
  • Rendition driver update to current XFree86 driver, which should

fix all previously reported bugs in driver

  • Fix bug with Mesa DRI support on 2.6.x kernels when using SSE on Intel CPUs.
  • The system initscript now calls fc-cache when it detects that new fonts

have been installed since the last time fc-cache was run. This results in
much faster font access when using applications that use the Xft/fontconfig
libraries for font access, which includes most modern GNOME/GTK+/KDE/Qt
applications. Opentype fonts are now properly handled as well.

  • Updated ATI Radeon driver, which adds new experimental support for

some of the newer ATI Radeon hardware that was not supported in the
official XFree86.org 4.3.0 release. Some previously unsupported Radeon
9200/9600/9800 models may work experimentally now; however, there are
still some models not yet fully supported. Future updates may enhance
the driver further.

Users of XFree86 should upgrade to these updated packages, which resolve
these issues.

Solution

Before applying this update, make sure all previously released errata
relevant to your system have been applied.

To update all RPMs for your particular architecture, run:

rpm -Fvh [filenames]

where [filenames] is a list of the RPMs you wish to upgrade. Only those
RPMs which are currently installed will be updated. Those RPMs which are
not installed but included in the list will not be updated. Note that you
can also use wildcards (*.rpm) if your current directory *only* contains the
desired RPMs.

Please note that this update is also available via Red Hat Network. Many
people find this an easier way to apply updates. To use Red Hat Network,
launch the Red Hat Update Agent with the following command:

up2date

This will start an interactive process that will result in the appropriate
RPMs being upgraded on your system.

If up2date fails to connect to Red Hat Network due to SSL
Certificate Errors, you need to install a version of the
up2date client with an updated certificate. The latest version of
up2date is available from the Red Hat FTP site and may also be
downloaded directly from the RHN website:
