praduman,
What version of VMware workstation are you using? and what method of install?
Are you creating a bare VM shell then booting from the ISO image? or attempting a scripted install?
My guess is, that if you are doing a scripted/wizard install it may not detect the RHEL 7 media as a valid install source in your current version of Workstation.
Also make sure that the ISO file you downloaded is complete by checking the checksum/hash for the file.
Can you post some screenshots and provide a link to better explain the following comment:
"the "software-->installation source" is not taking its default value"
Have you validated the checksum of the ISO image to confirm it is not corrupted?
Did you download the 'Boot ISO' or 'RHEL 7.0 Binary DVD' iso image?
You need to download the 'RHEL 7.0 Binary DVD' image if you are trying to install locally and don't have a local software repository, it should be roughly 3.5G.
The Boot ISO that you have is for network based installs.
Please let me know if that resolves your issue.
Work station 10 does not support RHEL7. Its a 3.0 kernel. Get work station 11. The new release supports RHEL7.
I played around a lot with it before obtaining my RHCSA v7. I had to use exsi.
Thanks
Thanks
For home use, another alternative virtualization product is "VirtualBox" by the company Oracle. It's free, I'd only recommend it for home use...
That being said, on could load their system with Fedora, then run KVM Virtualization and then virtualize their own Red Hat servers for whatever home-use study they might be doing.
Wow, I have downloaded DVD and ISO and neither can find the file when trying to create a linux VM under workstation 11. When I go into workstation to create new VM, it prompts for the install or iSO. So I point to the folder of the DVD or ISO I downloaded and it cannot seen to find the disk or image. Can someone assist me as well? It's not corrupt because I have watch this download several times.
I have the same problem as Joe Lee. I have Workstation 11 and I can't find the base repository.
It is an issue not resolved or it issue died. Thanks in advance.
Same problem here.
I have downloaded both the RHEL 7.1 Boot ISO and the RHEL 7.1 Binary DVD with the same error.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Please try this I/O controller type is LSI Logic. It will work.
I spent 2 hours in order to fix this On VMware fusion then I solved using the DVD image, it works, Take it easy my friend!

Hi,
I had the same issue ("error setting up base repository") attempting to install "rhel-server-7.2-x86_64-boot.iso" using VirtualBox v5.0.12. The solution is installing the full DVD image "rhel-server-7.2-x86_64-dvd.iso".
Problem solved.
I am having a similar problem, I am trying to install RHEL 7 on VMware workstation 12 pro but it skips the configuration part. Can anyone help.
Hi all You can simply add one more virtual DVD drive in VMware --Load both rhel-server-7.2-x86_64-boot.iso and rhel-server-7.2-x86_64-dvd.iso --Start installation
I am having the same issue "error setting up base repository" on virtualbox 5.1.4 with CentOS 7 as host. I don't understand how to use the full DVD ISO as a way to install the minimal ISO. Why the minimal ISO if I still need to revert to the heavy-weight DVD iso to complete minimal installation? Can someone further explain this to me?I am trying with Red Hat 7.3 which is development release
Had the same issue and resolved it. I had two issues and am assuming both were causing the issue. I created two optical drives - one for boot media and second for installation DVD on a separate controller. To resolve the issue I removed and recreated one CD drive on the same controller as virtual disk mounting only DVD media instead of boot media. Viola!
Hi Friends, I have download and installed red hat 7.0 Enterprise but i cant view the wired option in networking settings so any one help me how to enable the internet in same version.
Hi i have the same problem with virutalbox the source image is in error with the iso image from rehl https://developers.redhat.com/download-manager/link/2564707 not the DVD one won't boot but the iso works and boot with the install (dos menu). Try to put the image on usbstick share the usb in virutalbox setting, nothing works... ! Installing rehl in a virtualbox should not be that complicated....
Michel,
Please bear with me, I may cover some of what you've already done. However, one thing overall is to make sure you're using the Binary DVD and not a boot disk, and to make sure the DVD you downloaded is valid (you can check it, I have instructions here). Red Hat's Developer website has instructions specifically for Virtualbox (and you may have already seen it)
Since you are using Oracle VirtualBox and intend to install RHEL from a DVD ISO,
- Check the sha256 sum of the RHEL Server iso for 2 reasons, 1) to make sure your Binary DVD is not corrupted and 2) that you are not inadvertently attempting to use a boot dvd. (no need to burn an image to a physical DVD, no need to use a flash drive)
- Make sure you are using the Binary DVD, and that the sha256 Checksum is 431a58c8c0351803a608ffa56948c5a7861876f78ccbe784724dd8c987ff7000
- If by chance you are using just the boot ISO to attempt to load it, that disk does not contain everything to load RHEL.
- If you have any doubt on which file you have, re-download the one matching the sha256 sum (listed above).
- To check the sha256 sum in windows, open powershell and use this (assuming your install DVD iso is in c:\temp\ as below, otherwise change the path):
# since you're using Oracle Virtualbox, probably on windows....
get-filehash c:\temp\rhel-server-7.4-x86_64-dvd.iso -Algorithm SHA256
# see sha256 checksum for rhel7.4 above in this reply
- You probably already have seen this, but check the website developers.redhat.com https://developers.redhat.com/products/rhel/hello-world/ (sign in if needed) and click on the "
VirtualBox" tab. - Scroll way down to where it says: "Next, configure the VM to use the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server binary DVD ISO file as a virtual CD/DVD:" which is where you navigate to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server binary DVD ISO file.
Next, configure the VM to use the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server binary DVD ISO file as a virtual CD/DVD:
Select the Storage section of the VM Settings dialog.
Under Controller: IDE, select the CD icon that says Empty next to it.
On the right side, under Attributes, click the CD icon on the far right.
Select Choose Virtual Optical Disk File.
Navigate to the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server binary DVD ISO file that you downloaded earlier.
Click OK to close the VM settings dialog.
Let us know how it goes, Wish you well,
- RJ
Hello,
I had the same issue.
For me it worked with downloading the Binary DVD (+/- 4GB) and mounting that instead of the 400MB .iso one.
I downloaded the Binary DVD file here: https://access.redhat.com/downloads/content/69/ver=/rhel---7/7.4/x86_64/product-software (5th download).
Before I always mounted with the 400MB one and I couldn't get it changed to "Local Media".
Good luck
Folks does anyone have a fix for it , tried it in vmware 12 , 11 and also linux 7.0 7.4 nothing works . community is really weak
