Documentation confusing

Latest response

Does anyone know where I can find documentation for version RHEL 6.5? Every time I use the documentation system it sends me to RHEL 7. I try some of the commands it suggests and get a command not found message. When I do a search for a answer, I get a list of links and when I link to a document I have cannot tell what version or version number the document is talkiing about.

There is also no search or filtering device in the documentation section, itself.

I found RHEL 6 deployment docs but I go into, for example, DNS section and it talks about a /etc/named directory and a /etc/named.conf file. I don't have those. What's up with that?

Some commands I got from other docs,
localectl list-locales
hostnamectl status
systemctl --help
All return "command not found". What's up with that?

Very difficult to get basic advice.

Any help appreciated.

Hi James,

When you visit https://access.redhat.com/site/documentation/en-USRed_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/ are you able to click the version number in the rounded box that is on the top left hand of the page?

Do you in fact, even see that box?

If you cannot see it, or the selection does not work, please can you let me know your OS and Browser details so that we can test here.

Many thanks,
Mark

Hi James,

You will only have /etc/named if you have installed the Bind DNS Nameserver.

If you are looking for how to configure DNS as a client, then /etc/resolv.conf is what you seek.

You can find more out from section 9 of the Deployment Guide (but for that specific question just do man resolv.conf)

The following commands you mention are all part of systemd in RHEL 7, they are not available on RHEL 6.

localectl
hostnamectl
systemctl

Best Regards,
Mark
