Hi Lwandile,
OpenSCAP is probably what you are looking for, are you running a Red Hat Satellite server?
A good place to start is here:
https://access.redhat.com/site/documentation/en-US/Red_Hat_Network_Satellite/5.5/html/User_Guide/sect-Red_Hat_Network_Satellite-User_Guide-OpenSCAP-OpenSCAP_in_RHN_Satellite.html
Hello Lwandile,
I would certainly recommend looking at OpenSCAP as Pixel recommended, a couple other minor tips:
- One tiny facet of this that in some situations might be useful is 'aide'. This next link is just a bit of an introduction
If you are using hardening guides - and happen to be testing on VMware or KVM, you can take snapshots prior to applying some of the hardening, and in KVM, use qcow2 and take a snapshot.
Red Hat also has a security guide (this one is for RHEL 6).
Keep backups of important configurations, consider using your satellite server for configurations with revision and or subversion.
Lwandile,
