RHEV-H Installation on Flash SD Card.

Latest response

Hello,

Our server doesn't contains Hard disk, neither SSD, only Flash SD Card.
It is a 8 GB SD Card.

Is it possible to install RHEV-H (Hypervisor) on it?
How about the partitions?

Although I have not specifically installed RHEVH on the internal SD, but I HAVE accidentally install RHEL on it - like in this thread http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/servers/f/956/t/19500711.aspx

I believe the thing we struggled with was figuring out how to disable, or work-around the situation (which in our kickstart was "--onbiosdisk=80" - it was a bit of a hassle to figure out which biosdisk our PERC devices were - I am sure you could do the same with the SD card. Then I imagine you have to make sure the BIOS has the SD as a boot device near the top of the list.

I picked Dell because that's what we have and searched for "Install RHEL on dell SD"

I found the following
https://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2011-1783.html
663658 - Additional support/testing for booting RHEVH from SD card devices

Note the the fact that SD cards have limited write cycles.
So there can be issues, if you are looking to use the same setup for a long duration
in a busy environment.

Hi,

Thank you all for your reply.

In fact I would like to use SD card only to boot hypervisor and use storage disk as installation disk.
But I don't know how to do it.

Hi Guys,

Now I could understand better the process of RHEV-H installation.
During the installation you have two steps to choose disks.

One to choose disk to use for booting RHEV Hypervisor, in this case we choose SD Card disk.
On next screen, you have to choose disk(s) to use for installation of RHEV Hypervisor, this one we choose a disk from storage.

So, it will use SD Card only to put "/boot" and the storage disk to everything else, like binaries, config, swap, log.

Thank you all for supporting us.
