vmware vsphere web client single user mode no keyboard

I'm basically putting this here because I couldn't find a solution, and it drove me crazy for about 45 minutes.

A server wouldn't boot after a config change. I tried 3 methods of getting into single user mode:

rw init=/sysroot/bin/sh

rd.break

systemd.unit=emergency.target

All of them dropped me at a prompt, but when I typed, nothing. The only thing that worked was CTRL C.

The solution...turn off the scroll lock!

Yeah, hitting scroll lock is my hot key for my KVM so sometimes it gets stuck on and don't even think about.

If I had seen a post like this when searching for the keywords in the title, I'd be in bed already!
