Black screen with Home file and trash bin after login

I am having this issue right now. My RHEL 7 vm is hosted on ESXi 6.7. I'm currently running 7.7. I was trying to upgrade my Tenable.sc and I was following the instructions on Tenable.sc manual to perform a backup via CLI. In the root user account I ran /bin/systemctl stop SecurityCenter and it stopped. Then I ran killall ps -fu tns to kill services so I can start the backup. I ran tar -pzcf sc_backup.tar.gz /opt/sc and it started the backup process. The problem is it only wrote 2048 of 10240 bytes because I didn't have enough storage for that vm. I got an error: "tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now" I then shut the vm down so I could add more storage to it and it failed to do that. Then, I turned the vm back on, it started up normally, I logged in with the admin account, and then I got a black screen background with a "home" file and a trash bin.
