  • Server no longer boots to the GUI

    Posted on

I did a fresh install of RHEL server 7.9 on a computer asset that has internet access. There are a good 200+ patches to download to eliminate any vulnerabilities up to this point.

A co-worker had patches/updates for workstation already downloaded. I performed a DNF upgrade using the workstation patches. Now the computer will successfully boot, but will not boot to the GUI.

I checked the status of systemctl default and it is set to graphical.target
I tried a groupinstall "Server with Gui" hoping it might re-install the GUI. I received a response indicating there was no such package.
I also tried groupinstall gnome-desktop x11 fonts. I received the same response indicating there was no such package.

I have the packages that come with the install in a separate repo on the local asset.

What happened? (other than the obvious of don't use workstation updates). Specifically, which patch(es) messed this up? Is this recoverable?

RH needs to considering making downloading of patches easier rather than one at a time to fix each individual file. Or maybe an additional file that contains all updates in one file

    Thank you in advance.
